Ski Hostels Feature

Hit the Pistes without Injuring Your Bank Balance

Even though the travel industry has started to take a knock from the credit crunch, there’s still plenty of scope for ski and snowboard enthusiasts to enjoy the slopes on a budget.

Whether you’re a ski beginner or a seasoned pro and are hitting the pistes with a strict budget in mind this year, it’s possible to have a fantastic time on the cheap by choosing accommodation, ski passes and rental equipment independently – all of which can make your trip much more budget-friendly.

In Canada, Whistler resort is one of the most popular ski towns in the state of British Columbia and provides thousands of crisp white acres to play on each year. Home to the beautiful mountain ranges of Blackcomb and Whistler, it makes for a spectacular holiday that regularly sees the summit covered in 9 meters of snow.

The terrain is mapped out with various routes and trails according to your ability; always helpful for novices as it reduces the chances of ending up on the wrong piste.

But whilst this well-known ski spot can be pricey, Whistler hostels can greatly reduce costs that disappear on accommodation – and hence an excellent option to keep your ski holiday cheap.

The Villas and The Marquise hostels can both be found on the Blackcomb Mountain with brilliant access to the slopes and surrounding villages. So these ski hostels not only save you a bundle, but also offer a taste of the party atmosphere and entertainment which the village is renowned for.

The picturesque city of Innsbruck is situated in the Austrian state of Tyrol and doesn’t appear to be a sought-out destination for skiers and snowboarders. But looks can be deceiving; this valley region twice hosted the Winter Olympics during the 60s and 70s and is a very well-equipped destination for skiing.

The winter months can get extremely cold here, which provides some fantastic slopes, whilst the seasonal markets in town make a great break from the pistes.

Another for budget travellers, though, is the great selection of hostels in Innsbruck . The resort can be a tourist hotspot during peak season so it’s advisable to book accommodation in advance to get the best deal. The Alp Art Hotel and Binders Hotel come highly recommended; modern facilities, perfect location and very modest prices make them both ideal ski hostels.

Similar to Innsbruck, Interlaken is a pleasant and placid town that lies in the canton of Bern, the Swiss capital. The area is located between the Thun and Brienz lakes, loomed over by the mountainous region of Jungfrau, Eiger and Mönch – making for some of the very best skiing.

Great views are also a highlight of these peaks, particularly on the traditional wheeled-trains that direct you up Jungfraujoch after dark.

The area has plenty of good ski backpacking accommodation, making it an ideal stopping point for travelers exploring Europe. Popular Interlaken hostels include the wooded caverns of Jani’s Apartments and the pleasant Rugenpark B&B. Both offer very comfortable rooms with prime locations providing easy access to not only the town, but also the railway station and the rest of spectacular Switzerland.
