Summer in ski resorts

There is more to ski resort life than skiing (believe it or not!). Europe's Alps are a hive of activity during July and August: hiking, mountain biking, golf, mountain climbing and paragliding… the list goes on. So, what's on where? Some suggestions for getting the best out of summer-time in the mountains.

Walk and climb in Chamonix, France
France's best known ski resort is actually busier in the summer months. Its steep-sided peaks are a magnet for climbers while ramblers and walkers enjoy the numerous footpaths across the Aiguilles through cool forests to high altitude mountain lakes.

Classical music in  Verbier, Switzerland
The Verbier Festival & Academy offers 17 days of music from 20 July to 5 August with performances from prestigious artists such as pianist Evgeny Kissin and Joshua Ritter. The Swiss ski resort is also the starting point for the Grand Raid Cristalp Verbier-Grimentz the world's most famous mountain bike endurance race.

Mountain-bike in Les Deux Alpes, France
The French ski resort of Les Deux Alpes hosts the "Mondial du VTT - Free Raid Classic VTT" from 21-24 June 2007. Keen mountain bikers can test the latest products for free, join mountain bike tours with VTT guides and "ooh" and "aah" as the pros show off their stuff on the "Dirt", "Free Trail" and "Water jump". The 8th edition of the "Mountain of Hell", a VTT freeride descent, is also held here from 20-22 July 2007.

See three ski resorts in 1 day: Zermatt - Andermatt - Davos/St Moritz, Switzerland
Pick your next winter ski destination by train. Swiss Rail's Glacier Express runs from May to October between some of the world's best known Swiss ski resorts from Zermatt to Davos or St Moritz and passing though Andermatt. The 8-hour journey passes through spectacular mountain scenery crossing 291 bridges, through 91 tunnels and over the 2,033 metre high Oberalp Pass. See www.glacierexpress.ch for more info

Play championship golf in Crans Montana, Switzerland
The Swiss ski resort of Crans Montana hosts one of Europe's most prestigious golf events, the Omega European Golf Masters from 6 to 9 September. Amateur golfers can pay to play any of the 4 golf courses in the resort, which include the 18-hole Severiano Ballesteros course.

Multi-activity in Saas Fee, Switzerland
Saas Fee in Valais, Switzerland is one of the few truly year-round ski resorts. There is summer skiing on the Allalin glacier but the village's real appeal for a summer break lies in the breadth of activities on offer. Ranging from the Alpine Gorge "Tyrolienne" Canyon experience, breakfast at the world's highest revolving restaurant, 350km of hiking trails up among 4,000 metre peaks, 70km of mountain-bike trails, a Via Ferrata, a 9-hole golf course and the Feeblitz toboggan run there is truly something for everyone.

Walk the Haute Route: Chamonix to Zermatt
One of the world's greatest multi-day treks, the Classic Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt passes through incredible mountain scenery past the awe-inspiring peaks of Mont Blanc, Grand Combin and the Matterhorn. Guided mountain adventure company, Mountain Tracks, runs 3 Haute Route trips between July and mid-September.
