China Unveils Plans for Biggest Ski Resort in Asia 26-01-10
China has unveiled plans to build Asia’s biggest ski resort. The Kasas International Ski Resort would be built over a 10 year period in the western province of Xinjiang. The ski resort would be built at 2,000 metres, in a region which usually receives good snowfall from November to May. The project would cost an estimated $730 million, and take 10 years to build.
Xinjiang has received particularly heavy snowfall this year, with tragic consequences. Recent blizzards have left several people dead, adding to the region’s problems. The autonomous area is home to conflict between the native Uighur population and the Han Chinese people – a tension which culminated in the death of 200 people and a further nine executions following riots last summer.
