Fewer Visitors to Colorado Ski Resorts Last Season 22-06-09
Colorado has become the latest US state to reveal a decline in visitor numbers for last season. Colorado Ski Country USA has announced a 5.5 per cent decline in the number of skiers and snowboarders visiting the state’s ski resorts last season, despite strong results in some ski areas. Colorado’s results are in line with the 5.5 per cent decrease reported by the National Ski Areas Association for the season.Total skier numbers to the group’s 22 member ski areas fell by 6.9 per cent to 6.79 million, though that figure excludes Vail Resorts Inc.’s four Colorado ski resorts – Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Vail, which took the total up to 11.85 million. The 5.06 million visitors to Vail Resort’s ski areas represented a 3.5 per cent decrease on the previous season’s figures.
Despite Vail and Beaver Creek both reporting an increase in visits last season, the National Ski Areas Association warned that destination resorts suffered the most last season. Indeed, ski resorts within driving distance of large cities were expected to do well, with Loveland Ski Area, situated 50 miles from Denver, one of the few ski resorts in Colorado to report an increase in visits.
