French Ski Resorts Report Solid Season 08-03-10

French ski resorts have revealed solid figures for the season so far, though the economic downturn continues to make life difficult for resort owners. Hotel and chalet occupancy rates are down by about 3 per cent on average compared with last season, meaning occupancy rates in ski resorts in the Savoie and Haute-Savoie regions stand at around 85 per cent.

Restaurants and shops have, however, seen revenues decrease, while there has been a change in the type of visitors taking to the slopes in France. Fewer British and Parisian skiers have visited French ski resorts this year, though overall the number of French people taking a winter ski holiday in France has risen slightly from 39 per cent last year to 40 per cent this season. The gap left by the Brits and Parisians has largely been filled by an increase in the number of Russian and Spanish skiers visiting French ski resorts.
