A new gondola in China has broken the record for the world’s highest gondola, with the top station 4,843 metres above sea level. The lift provides access to the Aba Great Glacier in Sichuan province and has been built by European company Doppelmayr. The top station is 327 metres higher than the previous record holder, which was also built by a European company in China at the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Yunnan province.
Doppelmayr have constructed the gondola on behalf of Aba Dajiuzhai International as they look to capitalise on the two million people who visit the tourist region each year. The lift has a capacity of 800 people per hour, taking 9.4 minutes to make the ascent which provides views of a stunning mountain lake. Construction work actually finished in March, 18 months after work began, but the gondola has only just opened to the public.
