Ski touring

St. Anton offers many off-piste options, ranging from the easy Rendl Scharte to the challenging Ferwall side of the Maroikopf.
Rendl – Hockar
This short day tour offers minimum ascent for maximum descent, only 45 minute climbing with skins to gain 250 vertical meters will present over 1,200 meters of outstanding north facing powder taking you on a journey through high alpine scenery leading to dense forest trails ending in St. Jacob on the edge of St. Anton. To reach this area you must first ski into Hinter Rendl and then skin up the west face to gain the Hochkar Spitze summit. The entry point is complicated between cliffs so you should seek information before engaging on this tour from the ski school or Piste To Powder Guides in town. Better still take a guide.

Rendl Scharte
Popular with many groups due to its ease of access and non challenging terrain Rendl Scharte is a perfect introduction to the world of booting or climbing with skins for rewarding skiing! It’s possible to walk the route but skinning will ease the job slightly. A climb of only 200 vertical meters opens up access to a wonderful valley set in unspoiled alpine scenery. The descent is both great early and late season if the correct lines are chosen on the descent. From the Riffel 2 chair lift ski 250 meters into Hinter Rendl and after skins are donned gain the col and enjoy a rest before the ski.

Kreuzjoch Spitze - Kappl
One of Graham Austick’s favourite tours this one gives you ski spring snow and powder in the same day. Skiing initially into Rosfall you have to skin for around one and a half hours to reach the summit of Kreuzjoch Spitze. Then the south face is skied to connect to the resort of Kappl from where you ride a lift to reach the Latte joch then ski in to Malfontal in April powder to cap a perfect day.

St.Anton to Ischgl
A good hard day tour skiing starting with a 3 hour climb to reach the Raute joch from where there are glorious descents down south and east slopes to reach Paznauntal and the resort of Ischgl. An early start will ensure a descent no later than 11am if you’re heading for spring snow in March or April. Recommended is to take a guide and sleep one night in the Damstadter Hut which is nestled at the foot of the dominating Kuchen Spitze Mountain. Also recommended that you persuade a friend to drive the one hour journey to Ischgl and bring you back, but not before you enjoy the après ski – Ischgl is the party capital of the Alps.

Stuben Maroikopf
Maroikopf is another of Stuben’s treasures. The summit is gained either by a 30-minute boot or a 20-minute skin, and either way it’s a short amount of effort for the breathtaking rewards that will have you returning again and again for more!

From the summit of the Maroikopf you are faced with a staggering choice of descents. To the west you will ski towards Langen through a playground of rolling hills, gullies and forest, this area holds great powder many days after a snowfall. Alternatively you can ski the east side to Ferwall, which offers great skiing all winter with powder until the end of February and perfect spring snow in March and April. The Ferwall side requires good route finding skills as the terrain is steeper and more challenging and under fresh snow conditions so it is important that you or your guide know how to evaluate snow conditions and potential avalanche risks.

Snow boarders will not enjoy the push out along the forest road which is roughly two kilometres long eventually finishing up at the ‘time stood still’ Ferwall Resthaus, where you can enjoy a well earned rest and a drink or two while waiting for a taxi to take you back to St. Anton.
