The Arlberg off-piste
© copyright Lech Zürs Tourismus GmbH
St Anton, like Europe's other classic freeride domains Chamonix and Verbier, is a magnet to helmeted,
Goretex™-suited skiers. Transceivers on, shovels and probes protruding
from back packs, these aficionados of the off piste world search for
the best powder and countless adrenaline surging descents hidden among
the Arlberg’s intricate valley systems, some of which remain untracked
for several days after the last big dump and make the Arlberg an
attractive alternative to some other established off piste resorts,
especially for those willing to hire a guide and venture far from the
lift system and off the beaten track.
The seemingly endless open slopes, forests and couloirs such as the vast Rendl back bowls, the unprecedented powder in the hidden Langen forest, the steepness of the Schindler shoots and topping the pile for the brave hearted is taking the plunge down the north face of the airy Valluga summit, boasting sheer precipices on all sides that will guarantee a truly unforgettable skiing experience.
St. Anton created special runs for the off piste enthusiast called Ski Routes or Itinerary runs which are indicated by a red diamond sign. These ski routes are controlled for avalanches and patrolled but not pisted; they receive heavy traffic when open and do not offer the escapism and adventure when exploring the hidden off piste with a guide.
