Montafon Ski Resort

Montafon ski resorts in the south-western corner of Vorarlberg, Austria, are surrounded by three mountain ranges – chalk cliffs of Rätikon to the north-west, the Silvretta mountains (with glaciers and 80 peaks over 3000m) to the south and Verwall north-east, with many iconic mountains including Zimba, Drei Tűrme (Three Towers), Madrisa, Pateriol and highest peak Piz Buin 3312m.

Although not especially high – the skiing is mostly between 1600-2400m, Montafon has a long winter season from December until end April. Low pressure systems blowing in from the Atlantic bring substantial precipitation and, when they reach Vorarlberg, regularly dump snow on the Rätikon, Silvretta and Verwall mountain ranges surrounding the Montafon valley, resulting in above average snowfall.

Montafon is easy to get to and there’s lots of reasonably priced family friendly accommodation – most of it in Schruns, St Gallenkirch, Gaschurn and Gargellen – along with 219km of well-groomed pistes and plenty of activities for non-skiers. Montafon’s marked ski runs are predominantly red and blue, and especially good for intermediates and beginners but there’s plenty of challenging off-piste skiing including some of the best ski touring in Europe. The snowboarder friendly ski areas feature one of Europe’s top snowparks and around 30 mountain restaurants (mostly with sun terraces) and an efficient lift system now benefiting from substantial investment in new lifts.
