Courchevel 1850 is the pulse of the resort and has recently
been trying to improve the appearance of some of the less aesthetic
purpose-built buildings by adding wood cladding. Many of the top hotels
fringe the pistes and there is a large chalet village to the right of
the resort centre underneath the Plantrey chair. There are some
stunning chalets and hotels, including Byblos (which has a sister hotel
in St Tropez) and Le Mélézin. There are 15 four star hotels in all
including 9 which are deluxe (the French equivalent of five star). 1650
is quieter and prettier with a few nice bars but is not as centrally
located for the ski area.
La Tania, Courchevel 1550 and La Praz
La
Tania, almost halfway along the road to Méribel, is a purpose-built
resort in the modern tradition. Think lots of wood and glass, ski-in
ski-out accommodation and car-free centres and is a quieter, cheaper
family-friendly alternative to 1850. Courchevel 1550 is little more
than a cheap accommodation centre with two lifts feeding into 1850. La
Praz is a reasonably charming old village whose chief claim to fame is
the Olympic ski jump from the 1992 Savoie Olympics.
