There are five distinct areas to Les Arcs, as well as the very realistic option (thanks to the rapid funicular access into Arc 1600) of staying in Bourg-St-Maurice in the valley. Arc 1600 is dominated, like most of the resort, by apartments; Arc 1800 is the largest with 18,000 beds in a mixture of apartments and hotels, with great facilities for children; Arc 2000 has recently invested in several new buildings housing large chalet-style apartments and is lift-linked to the new village of 1950, which is made up partly of apartment buildings and partly of a very large Radisson hotel. The fifth centre, Vallandry, is expanding rapidly owing to the proximity of the Vanoise Express, and now boasts a new Club Med complex. There is also lift access into Les Arcs from Villaroger, on the western flank, over 2000m below the Aiguille Rouge. Optimum Ski’s large chalet is a popular spot for (mainly) English speaking guests.
