Ski Area
Sitting in a large bowl, with tougher runs on the perimeter and more intermediate slopes in the middle, Mount Hutt offers more than 365 skiable hectares (900 acres) in the main ski area and 107 hectares of back country skiing in the Rakaia Saddle chutes.

Ski Lift System
Mount Hutt’s ski trails and freestyle features are accessed by a six seater express chairlift, an express quad chair, a triple chair and a 140m long magic carpet – only four lifts but they cover a big area and carrying up to 7,400 riders per hour.

Ski equipment can be hired from Mount Hutt Ski Rentals at the ski area base station or from one of three ski shops in Methven.

Advanced skiers and riders can try Mount Hutt’s main bowl or head for the steeper challenges of the Double Black Diamond runs of South Face or the Rakaia Chutes.

Morning Glory and other blue runs provide some excellent cruising for
intermediate skiers and boarders, with The Towers another possible
option for stronger intermediates.

Beginner
Best slopes for complete beginners are in the area close to Mount
Hutt’s base station which includes perfect pitch slopes for novices. As
they gain confidence beginners can progress to large parts of the
central Mount Hutt ski area to ski runs like Wayleggo and Highway 72,
which are fairly benign.

Mountain restaurants
The fast-food Sky High Café at Mt Hutt, with exhilarating views
across the entire ski area, specialises in pizza, burgers, and
traditional fish and chips. Hutt Base Bar is a small licensed
coffee/bar outlet inside the cafeteria which also services the sun
deck.

Off the Mountain
Village
Mount Hutt has no real village on the mountain as such and there’s no accommodation on the mountain. The nearest community is 25km away, down the mountain road at quaint little farming town of Methven, where most skiers choose to stay in one of a dozen or more hotels from 4-star down to 1-star and reasonably lively nightlife.

Getting There
The closest town to Mount Hutt ski area and most convenient place to stay is Methven (26km). Christchurch is over 100 km away. The last 13km from the main road is a quite daunting drive along Mt Hutt Skifield Road, making Mt Hutt ski area more difficult to reach than most.
