Laax Ski Resort

Situated in the Swiss Alps, two hours south-east of Zurich, lies the resort of Flims Laax - a national treasure that was known only to very few outside of Switzerland itself but is now rising fast up the list of favoured ski resorts.

Previously known as Flims Laax Falera- the three towns which make up the ski area, the uber cool resort lies between 1,100 and 3,018m above sea level. Crowned with a glacier offering a lengthened ski season, Flims Laax sports an atmosphere of pride and belonging - you get the impression that everyone there belongs there, that they are in fact residents of their special home resort. Not that this makes you feel an outsider, far from it - you feel welcomed. Skiing here makes you feel special, that you are part of the ‘secret society’ resort.

The fact that the resort is predominantly unheard of outside of Switzerland is surprising, considering its credentials. Offering 220km of ski slopes, it is one of Switzerland’s largest ski areas and even has three unique snow parks. Coupled with its snow-assured status and outstanding scenery, Flims Laax easily outstrips what most other European resorts can offer. Despite this, Flims Laax remains predominantly a Swiss secret, which means great skiing and extremely short or non-existent lift queues. This comes at the expense, however, of a great nightlife which, during the week, can sometimes fail to match the amazing fun to be had on the slopes during the day.

Flims Laax is currently not a destination featured by British ski travel operators, a blessing which keeps its awesome atmosphere intact; it is void of pompous skiers who are there just to flash their cash. Owing to its hip atmosphere, there are two high profile snowboarding events which Flims Laax hosts every year - the Brits and the Burton European Open. These events attract those who are ‘real’ skiers and boarders to the resort, as opposed to those who have merely read about the resort in their ski travel catalogue. As a result of these boarding competitions, Flims Laax attracts a high number of boarders to the resort, to the point where boarders can sometimes outnumber skiers. Far from being something that management or visitors dislike, it is embraced - it lends itself to the ‘freestyle’ resort that it is. If you are one of those who have a problem with one plank less or more than you have on your feet, then Flims Laax isn’t the resort for you. You would only end up spoiling what makes Flims Laax the friendly, pure snow Mecca it is!
