There are no double black diamonds but enough black diamond (“most
difficult”) trails to give you long and demanding tests.
The moguls on
Exhibition on River Run are tough (catch the Exhibition chair) as is
Olympic. Also on River Run advanced skiers can tackle the Rock Garden
or Upper Holiday trails for moguls galore. The bowls are largely “most
difficult”—Little Easter Bowl especially —and the trails kick off in
wide-open bowls moving down into gladed trails.
Out of bounds is not patrolled, but for adrenaline seekers heliskiing
is available in the surrounding mountains, usually north of Ketchum. A
great way to enjoy the pockets of good powder snow in the backcountry
is with a one-lift tour. Sun Valley Heli-Ski is permitted to drop
expert and advanced skiers and boarders in over 750 square miles (1,200
sq km) of terrain. The one-lift helicopter tour combines a helicopter
flight into the backcountry with a full day of adventure. It can be
pretty hairy and avalanche warnings need to be checked.
