The park, founded in 1911, is Vancouver Island's largest and BC’s oldest Provincial Park. Mount Washington’s legendary snowfalls are due to its unique geographic location in Strathcona Park East, where the mile high mountain looms above the Comox Valley in the path of air masses rising from the Alberni Inlet on the west coast which are cooled as they pass the Comox & Cliffe Glaciers and high mountains to the south.

The mountain is named after Rear Admiral John Washington, a hydrgrapher of the British Navy and founding secreatary of the Royal Geographic Society.

Mount Washington is easy to get to by car – Strathcona Parkway is an excellent paved road that takes you straight up to the resort village, alpine and nordic facilities and lifts.
