Mountain guides can be booked for avalanche courses, deep-snow skiing and freeriding at the Mount Everest Ski & Alpine School run by Peter Habeler, the first Austrian to climb Everest without bottled oxygen. Other local celebrities include Stefan Eberharter, recently retired as one of Austria's most successful downhill skiers. Mayrhofen is also home to Uli Spiess, a world downhill champion in the late 1970s.
