Soll / Village

Although not ideally located – it’s next to the main road and
some half a mile or more from the slopes (a 15-minute walk if you don’t
take the bus) – Söll is one of Austria’s most easy-going and popular
resorts, both on and off the slopes. Some of the connecting villages,
particularly Going and Itter, have curious names. Ellmau, with its long
funicular, Hopfgarten, with its own impressive twin-towered church,
Brixen-im-Thale and Scheffau, perhaps the prettiest, complete the
circuit. The odd one out is Westendorf – not long ago named Europe’s
most beautiful village in a floral competition. Although part of the
SkiWelt circuit, with some of its highest slopes, it is not directly
linked with it.
Söll’s rural location kept it pretty much out of the last war until the final days – but in May 1945, German troops were ordered to hold the American divisions advancing from Wörgl The inhabitants fled into the mountains when German soldiers established a final defence line right in the village. In the ensuing battle, several American tanks were destroyed. A cease-fire averted an even greater catastrophe, and the last group of the German Wehrmacht surrendered. Today the attractive village has a pedestrianised area and an exquisite Baroque church, with vivid frescoes and red marble pulpit, crowned by a gilded swan church. A less-spiritual attraction is the Whiskeymühle, a vibrant discothèque housed in a building shaped like a barrel.
