Val Claret
This is the highest village; it is located at the foot of the mountains surrounding Tignes and is the perfect place to stay if immediate access to the lifts and piste to porch skiing are a high priority. Val Claret’s location adjacent to lifts facing in all directions means that the first lift and fresh tracks are a distinct possibility. If its 9-5 skiing you want then this is the place to be!
Off street parking is obligatory in Tignes. There is an underground car park with 945 spaces and an outdoor car park, situated at the hub of the lift and transport complex, with a further 750 spaces. For a 24 hr stay in a covered parking space the cost is €14. For 7 days it costs €69
Accommodation options range from catered chalets, to hotels to more affordable apartments. In Val Claret there is one 4 star hotel, two three-star and two two-star hotels. However, as is the case throughout Tignes, most people rent an apartment and go for self-catering. A comprehensive list of chalets and various accommodation agencies are published online with telephone booking also possible through a central booking number.
Tignes-Le-Lac
As the name suggests this village is situated next to a lake. The Maison de Tignes-Le-Lac is an impressive new building that fronts the resort: it offers information services, lift pass offices and houses the bus and coach station. A one-way road system pretty much succeeds in keeping traffic through the centre to a minimum. Tignes-Le-Lac is split into four quadrants: Le Lavachet, Les Almes, Le Rosset and Le Bec Rouge. Again you can choose to stay in more expensive hotels and chalets or opt for apartments. There are seven three-star and two two-star hotels here. Most of the hillside accommodation is only a few minutes walk to the lifts which will take you up towards Val Claret. Alternatively you can get a bus direct to the higher resort.
Like Val Claret parking is compulsory and there are a further 1580 indoor spaces here. Tignes-Le-Lac has more to offer in the way of restaurants and nightlife than Val Claret and is the place where most of the non-skiing related activities are located.
Les Boisses (1850) and Les Brevieres (1550)
The original village of Tignes disappeared beneath the waters of Lac de Chevril when the valley was dammed in 1952. As a result both of these villages were built nearby as well as the new settlements higher up. They are linked to the main ski areas by lifts and can be returned to by skiing at the end of the day. Both offer a cheaper option than staying in the main resorts but they are smaller and quieter with fewer services and less nightlife. However, buses run frequently to the main villages (though not as often after midnight) and for those on a budget Les Boisses and Les Brevieres offer viable options to stay and ski in Tignes.
