Selva
The obvious exceptions to the ‘must be central’ rule are the five star Alpenroyal, and the ‘four S’ star Granvara, with sumptuous spa complexes, incredible views and all that you might expect from a place of this calibre.
On a similar theme, with ‘wellness’ centres at the heart of the plan, there are no fewer than 13 four star hotels; many of the 40-plus three stars are chasing hard on their heels; even the more historic buildings such as the Hotel Posta al Cervo, right in town centre, are as comfortable and spacious as most skiers need.
There are 11 two stars, with fewer amenities but nevertheless the kind of quality to make French alpine hoteliers wince; the same can be said for the numerous bed & breakfast guesthouses, and the large range of apartments. There’s a total of 7900 guest beds within the resort.
S. Cristina
With under half of Selva’s guest beds, and less range, S. Cristina is still no slouch in the quality accommodation stakes with 5 four star hotels and 13 three stars.
Ortisei
Lots of hotels populate the steep south-facing mountainside above the village, all of which have sweeping views down the valley and relatively long descents into town centre.
There are two five stars, the Adler and Gardena, with not much to split them; 12 four stars, of which the Hotel Hell must surely be worth a visit; and 31 three stars add up to 5700 guest beds including pensions and apartments. As in the rest of the valley, the spa and ‘wellness’ provision is second to none; given Ortisei’s slightly less skier-friendly location, many visitors base themselves here to concentrate on relaxing and being pampered rather than ski, and Ortisei’s hoteliers seldom disappoint.
