Treble Cone / Ski area

This resort, 26 km from the idyllic small-town community of Wanaka, has become a regular stop-off for the Austrian national ski team in their warm-up months before the northern hemisphere winter.

Although it has a significant vertical drop of 700 metres (just over 2,000 feet – the longest in the Southern Lakes region) skiers and boarders have to embark on a 10-minute hike to get to the very top of the mountain at 2100 metres (6890 feet) where they can enjoy what is probably the best view from any ski area in the country: across the extensive Lake Wanaka and the Matukituki Valley, complete with a dramatic view of the Southern Alps, including Mt Aspiring and Mt Cook, New Zealand's highest peaks.

Lift system

In the hope that less is more, Treble Cone has recently streamlined its lift operation and now has only three lifts (plus a magic carpet) - but they are put to good use.
