Arosa / Accommodation

There’s a good choice of accommodation with many good hotels ranging from the 5-star Tschuggen Grand and Kulm hotels, the lively designer Hotel Eden down to the Vetter 1-star hotel next to the ski lifts in Arosa).

For convenience and to make the most of what nightlife Arosa has to offer stay close to the lake (and the lifts) in the centre of town or 5-minutes walk (bus or sleigh) uphill along Post Strasse or if you’re planning cosy nights at home in the comfort of your hotel and want good ski-in and ski-out accommodation you can choose between two out of town villages - Inner Arosa which, contrary to its prefix is the on-mountain western edge of Arosa or Prätschli on-mountain to the east and overlooking Arosa and the lake.

Topping the bill is the 5-star Tschuggen Grand
Swiss Deluxe Hotel - click on the link to view the individually interior designed bedrooms with terrific views and an amazing spa and wellness with extensive massage and beauty treatments as well as beautifully designed leisure and fitness facilities, all in stunning natural stone and glass design by architect Mario Botta. For a hotel that hits so many high notes the bar is a bit dull but that small detail apart the Tschuggen is a superb hotel and even has its own state of the art funicular ski lift (opening 2007/08 season) exclusively for guests. It’s up the hill (hence the views) but the distance shouldn’t trouble you unless your chauffeur goes awol in which case there’s the hotel limo service or you might actually enjoy the walk (15-minutes down the hill) to Arosa.

Similarly luxurious is the Swiss Deluxe 5-star Arosa Kulm Hotel & Alpin Spa at Inner Arosa. After a day’s skiing why not prop up the bar or sit in luxury in the Kulm Hotel’s tasteful lounge area surrounding the bar, then, unless you’re fortunate enough to be staying there, catch the free bus from outside the front door back to Arosa.

If 5-star is too rich but your plastic will stretch to 4-star there are ten 4-star hotels to choose between most convenient of which is the comfortable Sport Hotel Valsana close to the lake and the centre of Arosa and with its own pool and wellness area but which also offers guests reduced price entry to the spa at the Tschuggen Grand.

Many of the 4-star hotels are rather grand in style and if booking half board it pays to consider what style of dining you want during your stay as the dining experience in some large hotel dining rooms lacks atmosphere (not the sort of restaurant you’d particularly choose if not resident in the hotel) and although food is good presentation might be a bit too fussy. For 4-star comfort in a central location with good eating and good views try the Hotel Cristallo which has an excellent hotel restaurant as well as the street visible Le Bistro restaurant, both are open to non-residents and worth visiting.

Officially described as a “designer hotel” the Hotel Eden is not included in the SHV Swiss Hotelier Association 4-star or 3-star classification, but claims 4-star status as well as being one of Arosa’s most popular late night bars with the somewhat less appealing Kitchen Club disco in the basement. It’s a good place for groups wanting to party and makes an effort to host live bands capable of drawing a good crowd including well known acts such as the ultimate Abba cover band Bjőrn Again.

Down another level and there are sixteen 3-star hotels a number of which are particularly worth noting for proximity to town amenities, stylish and atmosphere, après ski or for ski-in ski-out or style, For a central location with lakeside views of Arosa and just a short walk from the chairlifts try the Hotel Obersee or the similarly priced Hotel Seehof which tops the 3-star category for it’s stylish interior, good restaurants (the Usteria and Cuculouche restaurants) and popular lounge bar.

Alternatively, for quiet nights in and ski-in ski-out convenience check out the charming chalet style Hotel Gspan at Inner Arosa, also a good place for lunch as an alternative to listed mountain restaurants.

Cheaper still there are six 2-star and one 1-star hotels, most convenient of which are the 2-star Carmenna Hotel overlooking the lake with busy bar and restaurant and the 1-star Vetter Hotel with its own small restaurant and bar situated right next to the chairlift and cable car and convenient for the town centre is.

There’s accommodation for around 7,400 guests with nearly 3,700 beds in 46 hotels and 3,100 beds in numerous self-catering apartments plus “back-packer” hotels and youth hostels the possibility to book a bed (or a bunk) on-mountain at the Hörnli Hut (26-beds) or Stoffelhut (10-beds) on Weisshorn.

Week-end bookings are generally welcomed except in high season (mid-February to mid-March) and Arosa is well worth considering for a short break especially after a good dump of fresh snow.
