Klosters

Prince Charles, who stays at the Walserhof, usually visits Klosters in early January, when there is an official press call but sometimes there are unofficial royal visits later on too. As a result, Klosters has become a place to see and be seen in and although some of the traditional wood and white stucco chalets may be rustic on the outside, inside many of them ooze expensive taste. Fur coats and chic footwear is the norm. Which is a far cry from the hamlets that developed here. Klosters originated in around 1220 AD with the founding of the St Jacob and St Christopher monastery, hence the name ‘Klosters’, which means monastery. Around 200 years later, German-speaking people from the canton of Valais settled in the Schlappin. In 1870, the first hotels were built, and the railway line from Landquart to Klosters was opened. This was the start of Klosters as an international tourist resort.

Today Klosters Dorf is the slightly smaller quieter end of town, while Platz has the main collection of hotels, restaurants and bars. Often the small streets become gridlocked, although the new bypass will help.
