Killington

The best skiing for advanced or expert is in the Canyon area off Killington Peak or at Bear Mountain, with the toughest skiing on Outer Limits—the steepest mogul slope in the East, covering 1,200 feet (365 m) of vertical in half a mile (0.8 km).

The Canyon area offers steep terrain on Double Dipper, and Ovation, on Skye Peak, is the steepest trail on the mountain with more than a 50-degree pitch. Machine-made bumps can be found on trails like Outer Limits, Superstar, and Needles’ Eye.

Officially there is no off-piste skiing at Killington and powder hounds will normally opt for the designated tree skiing in the Fusion Zones, or for Pico where you can find long-lasting powder without having to venture off-piste. But the Big K has been home to many great off-piste skiers and riders, and members of the original Tasmanian Telemarkers club have long been skiing off-piste in the backwoods. Local knowledge is essential! The difficulty of navigating off-piste in the woods should not be underestimated otherwise you are likely to find yourself stuck overnight in the forest. If you have the necessary skills, knowledge, and equipment to venture into the backwoods be sure to travel in groups of three or more or —better still, you may like to try and team up with the Tasmanians who allegedly meet at the Skyeship Gondola every Wednesday (November through May) at 10:00 am.
