The Canyons

The advanced or expert skier will find 42 percent of the trails suitable for them. The black diamond trails offer tree runs and canyons, and the toughest skiing for those in search of moguls, steep and deep, and couloirs, are any of the double black diamond trails down from Ninety Nine 90 Express quad, where you will be rewarded with spectacular views.

The Devils’ Friend off the Super Condor Express quad is particularly good for moguls. The Pines is good for powder, skiing through a charming grove of pine trees, near Saddleback Express quad, but the best trails for powder are those descending from Murdock Peak at 9,607 feet (2,882 m).

A good day’s skiing for advanced or expert skiers on a big powder day would be to go up to Ninety Nine 90 early in the morning, then move over to Condor Woods below Murdock Peak, and then hike up to Murdock Peak before you get too tired. There’s some magnificent backcountry skiing to be had here, but only expert skiers trained in avalanche safety and with the proper equipment should consider passing through the gates that access them (gates are subject to closure). Never go beyond a closed area boundary or a sign saying “Closed: Avalanche Danger.” You are strictly on your own when leaving through the backcountry gates, so be sure to read the warning signs before leaving the resort.
