Soll & SkiWelt Wider Kaiser - Brixental Ski Resort

Sőll is a traditional ski resort in the Austrian Tirol that's attractive to both familes and youthful party goers. It's part of the SkiWelt, a vast lift-linked ski area, and Soll has some of its best skiing. But the slopes are not high enough to be naturally snowsure so Soll relies on artificial snow making.

For the first-time visitor, Austria's vast SkiWelt ski area has an almost bewildering choice of nine different villages, all but one (Kelschau) fully linked by the modern ski lift system. And whilst all the villages have their charms, and some like Ellmau and Westendorf have better connections to nearby Kitzbuhel,  Söll has long been the favourite gateway.

Partly this is do with the village itself. Allthough Soll is quite large, it has a traditional core with an old church at its centre, and a pretty backdrop of woods and mountains. It’s not car-free but it’s far enough away from the main road for it to be unblighted by traffic, and most of the accommodation, whether in small hotels, apartments, chalets or B&Bs, is in  attractive low rise buildings. Add just a few flakes of snow, and you have an idyllic setting for a winter holiday in the Alps. Opinions divide on whether the resort’s boisterous après ski enhances this atmosphere but it’s certainly all there if you want it, from tea dancing in ski boots in mountain restaurants to all night clubs. And if you're not looking for this sort of party scene, it’s relatively easy to avoid – Soll has a deserved reputation for being family-friendly too.

Generally the SkiWelt's slopes suit intermediates who like short treelined blue and red runs, but the best area for advanced skiers who want a challenge is the North-facing terrain just above Soll which includes the Black Eagle piste and the Black Pipe ski route running doen to Hochsoll. But you don't have to be a good skier to enjoy Soll. Beginners can choose between nursery slopes at resort level or at mid mountain, and for anyone who wants tio improve their technique, the ski schools are excellent.

The SkiWelt is certainly large enough to satisfy most skiers for a week, if snow conditions are good. That used to be a big ‘if’ because almost all the skiing is below 2000m and Soll and the other SkiWelt resorts are only just above 700m. That is very low but the whole area has benefitted from a massive investment in artificial snowmaking. This still requires low nightime temperatures though, so be careful booking a holiday in late Spring well in advance.
