Stuben am Arlberg Ski Resort

Stuben is a small village in the middle of a large ski area - the Arlberg. Its location between St Anton and Lech-Zurs makes Stuben a great base for exploring the whole of the Arlberg, whilst its own mountain, the steep, snowy Albona, is a magnet for off-piste skiers and freeriders.

Stuben-am-Arlberg has a long history of taking in guests: accommodation was first built around here in 1218 on the instructions of Count Hugo I who ordered that “fire, water, and shelter” be provided; by 1330 the village was established, and at some point thereafter it started to be referred to as “the Kaiser’s highest living room”.

For advanced skiers, it's not really Stuben that is the main attraction but the Albona mountain above it. Unlike the other mountains in the Arlberg ski area, the Albona is not criss-crossed by pistes. Instead the best terrain is left for off-piste skiers and freeriders to discover, preferably with the help of a guide. The front face is all north-facing so powder here stays in better condition longer than it does on St Anton's mostly south-facing mountains, and it's refreshed more frequently because Stuben gets more snow.

But you don't have to venture off-piste to enjoy Stuben's location within the massive Arlberg ski area: basically it's in the middle, but just off the main circuit, so whilst Stuben-based skiers can easily use the Arlberg's efficient modern lifts to reach St Anton, St Christoph, Lech-Zurs and Warth-Schroecken, very few skiers from these villages veer off at Alpe Rauz to visit Stuben, keeping its pistes nicely uncrowded. And for really deserted slopes, the Arlberg's most underrated and forgotten about oupost at Sonnenkopf is just down the road.

Like all the Arlberg resorts, Stuben is easy to get to (Friedrichshafen, Innsbruck, Zurich, Munich and Memmingen Airports are within reach), and whilst it's small, Stuben has all the essentials that skiers and boarders need like hotels and apartments, restaurants and bars, ski hire outlets, a good local ski school with excellent mountain guides, and a village store with basic provisions. But Stuben is still a traditional mountain village with very little of the exuberance and luxury that you see elsewhere in the Arlberg, something you will reminded of every day when you take the old, slow and cold chairlift, which is the only way out of the resort on skis. Mercifully it's quite short, and you can huddle under a rug if the weather is bitter, but it serves as a reminder that in many ways Stuben is still the Kaiser's highest living room rather than a modern 21st century ski resort, and all the better for it.

Stuben ski and board hire

There are four equipment rental shops in or near the village: Après Sport Brändle (located in the Apres-Post hotel building), Strolz-Rent a Ski (near the Albona lift ticket office), Skibase Stuben am Arlberg (next to the Hotel Monschein) and Intersport Arlberg Flexenbahn (at the Alpe Rauz lift station for the Flexenbahn/Albonabahn II/Valfagehrbahn lifts).

The shops tend to compete on knowledge, range of equipment and service rather than price. If you want a significant discount, you should book online in advance. ALPINRESORTS.com works with various shops in and around the Arlberg, and some of these deliver and pick-up rental skis and snowboards from Stuben - click here for details and what discounts are currently available.
