Avoriaz Getting There

Getting to Avoriaz from Geneva Airport takes less than 2 hours, and is easiest to do via a specialist transfer service, but you can also hire a car or take a bus. There are also two train stations within an hour's drive of Avoriaz. Or you can drive all the way from the UK or Northern Europe.

Flying to Avoriaz: Nearest Airports

Geneva airport is the obvious gateway because it has plenty of flights and is only 100km (65 miles) from Avoriaz by the quickest route (A40).

  • Geneva Airport to Avoriaz: 100 km; about 1 hour, 45 minutes drive.
  • Chambery Airport to Avoriaz: 165 km; about 2 hours, 10 mins drive.
  • Grenoble-Isere Airport to Avoriaz: 222 km; about 2 hours 35 mins drive.
  • Lyon St Exupery Airport to Avoriaz : 217 km; about 2 hours, 30 minutes drive.

Getting to Avoriaz from Geneva Airport

You can obviously drive a hire car from Geneva Airport to Avoriaz but you can not use it in the resort because it is car-free. Therefore it's more convenient to use a ski resort transfer service. This saves you the worry and hassle of driving to the resort in an unknown car on mountain roads in wintry conditions (putting on snowchains in the dark in a blizzard is a rotten way to start a holiday) and usually works out cheaper too. Most transfer services take you to the Les Prodains Cable Car at Morzine, which is a quicker way to reach the resort than driving up the final winding road and parking on its edge (you're not allowed to drive inside in it). If your accommodation is too far to walk to from the cable car's top station (usually it won't be) you can hire a taxi or a horse drawn sleigh.

There are also public bus services from the airport to the resort (usually to the Prodains lift below it), which are cheaper, but the service is not very frequent and much slower. See http://www.sat-annemasse.com/lignes-regulieres for details. Or you can hire a car at Geneva airport - see the Getting to Avoriaz sby car section below for advice on routes and where to park.

Getting to Avoriaz by train

The closest train stations to Avoriaz are at:

  • Cluses (42kms away/1 hour drive)
  • Thonon-les-Bains (45 kms/1 hour drive)

The quickest way to get from the stations to the resort is by taxi, but there are much cheaper scheduled public bus services as well - see www.altibus.com for details.

Both Cluses and Thonon-les-Baines have direct TGV service from Paris Gare de Lyon which take about four and a half hours. But there are not many direct trains to either station, so often you have to change onto a local TER service at Bellegarde, Annecy or Lyons. The fastest indirect services can be slightly quicker than the direct service. Full details are at www.voyages-sncf.com.

Neither Cluses nor Thonon-les-Baines currently have direct Eurostar services from London but this is subject to change.

Getting to Avoriaz by car

Arriving in Avoriaz by car means first making your way to Morzine - the shortest route from Geneva airport is via Thonon-les-Baines and is just 85 kms (53 miles) but it can be quicker to go via the A40 and get off at Exit 18 at Cluses. Once you've reached Morzine, your choice is between a 40 minute drive uphill or parking your car and taking the Prodains Cable car to the Avoriaz plateau - which takes about 7 minutes. It's a car free resort so your car will be parked for the duration of your stay. Either way your total transfer time from Geneva airport will be just under 2 hours. Once you arrive you can hire horse drawn sleighs or tracked vans to transport luggage to your accommodation.

If you're driving all the way from the UK, it takes about 9 hours from Calais. The A26 route is usually quicker than the A6 route.
