La Tania Ski Resort

La Tania is one of the smaller ski resorts in The Three Valleys. It was developed for the Albertville Olympics of 1992 and sits at 1400m above sea level and, being car free, is particularly child friendly. It's easy to reach by air, rail or car. Airport transfers are simple to arrange.

The Three Valleys in the heart of the French Alps is the largest integrated skiing area in the world: 600 kilometres of skiing on 330 marked ski-slopes served by 180 ski lifts at between 1300 and 3200 metres. La Tania is in the Courchevel valley but only just - Meribel is just around the corner and easy for skiers based in La Tania to reach by taking two lifts up to the Col de la Loze, then skiing into Meribel on either blue or black runs. There is so much skiing in just the Courchevel valley alone, however, that you may not feel the urge to make this journey for several days. But when you're ready, Meribel is just the start on what is on offer to La Tania-based skiers and boarders. Les Menuires, St Martin de Belleville and Val Thorens  can be reached, skied in and returned from within a day, although an early start and a quick lunch are recommended if you are heading over to Val Thorens. And keep an eye on lift closure times - ski lift connections between the valleys are excellent, but buses between the valleys are few and far between, and taxi journeys are long and horrendously expensive.

Skiing & Boarding in La Tania

For more details on the wider Courchevel valley please see the Courchevel ski area section. But don't overlook La Tania's own slopes. By 3 Valleys standards, they are not very high - La Tania is located at 1400m and its lift go up to the Col de la Loze at 2305m - but crucially these slopes face North West and hold their snow well.  And there is a good variety of gradient - there are black, red, blue and green runs and some interesting off-piste. The local area really comes into its own when the light is bad, because the mountainside that La Tania shares with its neighbour Courchevel La Praz has the best tree skiing in all the 3 Valleys.

There is a 12 person gondola rising from La Tania which links to a high speed quad chair from which the Courchevel and Meribel ski areas ski areas can be accessed. There is also a series of 2 drag lifts that take you from the village to the Courchevel ski areas.

From skiing around the three valleys, the return to La Tania is on one of three pistes (a red, a blue and a green) that wind down through the forest into the village from the top of the gondola. The blue and green run are served by snow cannons to ensure that the village is accessible throughout the season.

In specially designed children's areas and on the Troika slope, children can start their skiing safely and for free. There is also a ski kindergarten for children three years and up.

While beginners and intermediate are well served by the skiing accessed from La Tania, advanced skiers can often find unspoiled powder on the north east facing slopes on the couloirs off the Col de la Loze.

As well as the ubiquitous École du ski Français, La Tania is home to a number of independent ski schools including Magic Snowsports Academy, New Generation, Ultimate Snowsports and Ski Class.

La Tania has several slopes for sledding.

Trains from Paris for Moutiers depart from the Gare de Lyon and normally take between four and six hours. There are direct trains from Paris and also indirect services which usually involve taking a TGV to Chambery, Aix Les Bains or Lyon, then completing the journey onto Moutiers on either a regional TER train service or a bus.

From the UK, Eurostar operates services to Moutiers from London St Pancras, which takes between seven and a half hours and ten hours. There are some direct trains with no changes, but these can take longer than services with one change in Paris, which necessitates getting from the Gare du Nord to the Gare de Lyon. If you take the Metro this is just two stops on RER line D (Direction Melun). Even allowing time to buy tickets and walk to and from platforms, this should not take more than 30 to 40 minutes. But if you have a lot of baggage, a taxi ride might be a better option.
