La Tania Ski Resort

La Tania is one of the smaller ski resorts in The Three Valleys. It was developed for the Albertville Olympics of 1992 and sits at 1400m above sea level and, being car free, is particularly child friendly. It's easy to reach by air, rail or car. Airport transfers are simple to arrange.

The Three Valleys in the heart of the French Alps is the largest integrated skiing area in the world: 600 kilometres of skiing on 330 marked ski-slopes served by 180 ski lifts at between 1300 and 3200 metres. La Tania is in the Courchevel valley but only just - Meribel is just around the corner and both Meribel and Courchevel are easy for La Tania based skiers to reach.

Skiing & Boarding in La Tania

By 3 Valleys standards, La Tania's slopes are not very high - the village is located at 1400m and its lift go up to the Col de la Loze at 2305m - but crucially its slopes face North West and hold their snow well. The mountainside that La Tania shares with its neighbour Courchevel La Praz also has the best tree skiing in all the 3 Valleys, which is useful in flat light. The blue and green pistes back to the village are reinforced by snow cannons, so you can ski back to the village even if it has not snowed for a while.

There is also a good variety of local slopes. Beginners have a free child-friendly nursery slope in the village then longer green and blue runs to start exploring on. They can also get over to Meribel on an easy blue piste (Boulevarde de la Loze) or to Courchevel on an even easier green piste. which goes to Courchevel 1850. Intermediates can switch between the local blue and red runs. Advanced skiers have the black run Dou de Lanches which connects with another black run (Jockeys) that decends all the way down to Courchevel Le Praz: the combined vertical is about 1000m. The Col de la Loze also accesses North-facing off-piste (near the Dou de Lanches run), East-facing off-piste (towards Courchevel from Chenus) and West-facing off-piste (from Boulevarde de la Loze towards Meribel) but only a guide can tell you whether it's safe for freeriding or not, so hiring one is strongly recommended.

The 3 Vallees

Although La Tania has an interesting little local ski area, intermediates and above will want to explore at least the Courchevel valley, and most will want to discover the whole of the 3 Valleys. It's quite simply the largest lift-linked ski area in the world, with skiing and boarding for every standard, and having access to this huge domain is the main reason most people choose to come to La Tania. And the lift connections between the valleys are so good that you really can ski over to Val Thorens, Les Menuires and St Martin be Belleville, and return to La Tania before the lifts close. But don't get too carried away and keep an eye on the time: the lift connections between the valleys are excellent but the bus connections are either terrible or non-existent. And the cost of a taxi back from Val Thorens to La Tania will be horrendous.

The nearest railway station to La Tania is Moutiers ("Moutiers-Salins-Brides Les Bains"), about 25kms away.

Trains from Paris for Moutiers depart from the Gare de Lyon and normally take between four and six hours. There are direct trains from Paris and also indirect services which usually involve taking a TGV to Chambery, Aix Les Bains or Lyon, then completing the journey onto Moutiers on either a regional TER train service or a bus.

From the UK, Eurostar operates services to Moutiers from London St Pancras, which takes between seven and a half hours and ten hours. There are some direct trains with no changes, but these can take longer than services with one change in Paris, which necessitates getting from the Gare du Nord to the Gare de Lyon. If you take the Metro this is just two stops on RER line D (Direction Melun). Even allowing time to buy tickets and walk to and from platforms, this should not take more than 30 to 40 minutes. But if you have a lot of baggage, a taxi ride might be a better option.

There are also international Thalys train services direct from Belgium and the Netherlands to Moutiers. From Southern and Eastern Europe, services from Geneva and Milan go via Chambery.

To get from Moutiers station to La Tania, there are several buses a day - see www.mobisavoie.fr for bus times. Alternatively you can take a taxi. The 25km taxi ride takes about 35 to 45 minutes door to door.
