Driving to the Val di Fassa

A car in the Val di Fassa can enhance the enjoyment of the area, but it must be pointed out that most skiers from Italy and other European countries (except from Britain) also have cars, and traffic and parking can be a problem at peak times.

It should be noted that there is an efficient ski bus service for getting between the villages and ski areas, with the exception of Moena so if you plan to stay in Moena and to ski in the Val di Fassa, a car is essential.

The main artery to the Val di Fassa is the motorway A22, which runs south to north from Verona to the Brenner Pass and on to Innsbruck in Austria. Coming from the north, turn off at the Bolzano Nord exit and then via Nova Levante and Passo Cotsalunga proceed onto Vigo di Fassa. From the south, take the Egna/Ora exit and proceed via Cavalese, and Predazzo onto Moena.

The other roads into the Val di Fassa all involve scenic journeys over mountain passes, and they are:

SS 346 - Passo San Pellegrino to Moena
SS 641 - Passo Fedaia to Canazei
SS   48 - Passo Pordoi to Canazei
SS 242 - Passo Sella to Canazei.

Car hire is available from all of the airports listed above and there may be a variation in price between Italy and Austria. Many motorways in Italy are toll roads, but unlike Austria or Switzerland, you don't have to buy a 'vignette' and you just pay as you go. Be sure that when you book your rental car that it is equipped with winter tyres, or you will have to pay more on arrival.
