Murren Ski Resort

Murren is one of the prettiest ski resorts in the Alps. The breath-taking scenery includes Jungfrau Region’s three most famous peaks and fantastic views of the Bernese Oberland from the rotating Piz Gloria restaurant at the summit of the Schilthorn.

Perched on the edge of a cliff, getting to Murren is quite an experience but it's well worth the effort. Murren is the Bernese Oberland's highest ski area and although quite limited in extent, offers incredible views of the cliff faces and peaks of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau which dominant the landscape on the far side of the Lauterbrunnen valley. There's good skiing between 1,500m and 3,000m including some challenging off-piste and fast descents for skiers; and thrilling 800m vertical descents from the cliff tops to the valley below, for expert base jumpers only.

Murren truly is a delightful Alpine village and one of the cradles of Alpine skiing. Ski slalom racing was invented in Murren in 1922 by Arnold Lunn who campaigned for ski racing to be recognised as an international event in the days when downhill skiing was considered suitable only for those too cowardly to ski or too feeble for cross-country! Murren has had a long association with the British ever since and attracts a discerning a clientele who come year after year to ski and to socialise.

Sir Anold's son Peter Lunn came to Murren every winter and participated in the Inferno race every year until he broke a hip in a car accident in 1990, but continued skiing regularly in Murren until the ripe old age of 96. He died at the age of 97 on 30 November 2011, but his description of Murren's ski area lives on "Three ridges running east to west, each with a north and a south side. Powder lasts longest on the north slopes, spring snow comes first on the south side. Our runs are quite challenging, and they make you think. Murren always gives you a game."
