Wengen Ski Resort

Wengen is a pretty, traditional, car-free Swiss mountain resort, perched on gently sloping shelf at the foot of the Jungfrau. Family oriented and a firm favourite among British skiers, many of whom return year after year, Wengen has some of the best views in the Alps and is ideal for intermediates.

Wengen's ski area, seamlessly linked with neighbouring Grindelwald, provides extensive and unusually scenic skiing. The breathtaking backdrop of the Eiger, Monch as well as Jungfrau is truly awe-inspiring. The skiing, with little in the way of seriously testing pisted terrain, is ideal for intermediates. It's an ideal location for families and skiers who want to enjoy a quintessential Swiss winter holiday without much risk of getting into any difficult situations.

It may seem rather irritating that you can't drive all the way to Wengen (you have to park your car near the station at Lauterbrunnen and take the cog railway to reach the resort) but when you get there you'll understand why cars would be pretty inappropriate. Wengen's charm, nestling on the mountainside above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, depends on its car free ambience. It's an altogether different feel from Grindelwald, which has the vibe of a small mountain town with normal traffic.

Wengen is also small, but some of it is built on a sloping hillside with old-world hotels and pensions scattered here and there. Although it's a delightfully scenic ride, it takes a while to reach the slopes at Kleine Scheidegg (the plateau where the two ski areas meet) by train, so if you want to plunge into the action as soon as possible, take the cable car to Mannlichen which is also roughly mid-way between Wengen and Grindelwald.

Wengen is one of those resorts with a huge loyalty factor among British skiers. This is exemplified by its historic Downhill Only Club (DHO), so called because British visitors to Wengen and Murren, on the other side of the Lauterbrunnen Valley, were successful in persuading the railway company to keep the trains running in winter, thus providing them with a means of getting to the slopes without having to walk up. Hence, with no up-hill to worry about they were able to spend much longer enjoying the down-hill.
