Engelberg Ski Resort

Engelberg is little known and under-rated even by its home-nation; this quiet town near a historic monastery in the centre of Switzerland has high North-facing snowy slopes with vertical drops of nearly 2000m - a perfect recipe for high quality off-piste skiing.

Arriving among the impressive Belle Epoque hotels of this sleepy town you can still see why Engelberg's founding father, a wandering monk, stopped in his tracks, had a vision and set up a monastery. It's not just the dramatic Hahnen peak spreading wing-like snowfields to the south, but a huge sweep of crags that almost surrounds the town.

For skiers and boarders, two mountains are more important than all the others: the mighty Titlis glacier, and the slightly smaller 2564m Jochstock. Lifts ascend almost all the way up Titlis to its second peak of Klein Titlis at 3028m, opening up a vast North-facing deep freeze so well stocked with powder that Engelberg is fast becoming the ski-bum's resort of choice for long-lasting, easy-to-find, deep-snow off-piste and freeriding - as exemplified by the Laub, a consistently steep descent down the shoulder of the mountain.

The Laub though is just one of the 'Big Five' off-piste and freeride runs that the town promotes (the other four are Sulz, Steintäli, Steinberg and Galtiberg). And once you've completed those you can move onto the High Five - five long itineraries for ski tourers and backcountry explorers.

For those who want to stay on the piste, Engleberg has its limitations. There are some pistes on Titlis and Jochstock, mostly reds on the top half and blues on the lower half. And across the valley on the sunny side of town is Brunni, which has lower, gentler, south-facing slopes; and lastly a bus ride away (but usually covered by the same lift pass) is the small Bannalp ski area above Fell. But whilst all these might satisfy a novice (there are decent ski schools), a keen intermediate who does not want to try off-piste skiing will exhaust the 80kms of runs in about three days.

And that might be exactly what is wanted because Engelberg is easy to reach and a great weekend destination. It can also be combined in a two-centre holiday with Meiringen-Hasliberg (best for weaker skiers) or Andermatt (best for stronger skiers) which are both just over an hour away by car. Or Engelberg's skiing can be supplemented with the other winter sports on its doorstep. There are cross country trails all around the town and up and down the surrounding lower slopes, a large natural ice rink at the Sportingpark, and a separate mountain dedicated to snowshoeing and tobogganing accessed from the nearby lift at Furenalap.

But no matter how long you stay in Engelberg or what you do, you can't escape its history. Engelberg was a town long before skiing became a popular sport, so it was never designed to fit around pistes and lifts. It's therefore a two-minute shuttle bus ride or fifteen minute schlep on foot from most of the accommodation to the main lift station - a small price to pay for accomplished skiers who relish the size and quality of the descents on offer, but there are easier ski resorts to stay in.
