Verbier Ski Resort

Verbier is famous for its legendary off-piste, glamorous nightlife and large, high ski area. Its location near Geneva makes it a favourite of jet-setters and oligarchs who want to ski hard and party even harder. But there are cheaper ways to access its 4 Valleys ski area.

At a glance, Verbier is a rambling collection of wooden chalets in a sun-kissed meadow 1500m up a mountainside, but despite rustic appearances the village is a purpose built ski resort which before 1925 was little more than summer pasture.

Verbier’s 4 Vallees ski area is the largest lift-linked ski domain wholly in Switzerland, with 412km of groomed pistes – 39% beginner, 44% intermediate and 17% advanced – and a whopping maximum vertical drop of nearly 2,000m off-piste from Mont-Fort Glacier (3,330m).

The entire ski domain (412km) is served by 92 ski lifts linking the resorts of Verbier, La Tzoumaz and Bruson as well as Nendaz, Veysonnaz and Thyon, over a dozen ski schools and guiding organisations operating from Verbier alone, and around 20 mountain restaurants.

Critics say the 4 Vallees ski area is hard to find your way around – partly a function of its enormous and varied terrain as much as poor signposting – and that the ski lift system is imperfect, but the biggest issue is simply that Verbier is a victim of its own success – a situation the lift company has addressed with increased lift capacity and improved signposting, but the piste maps and marking still leave room for improvement.

Thanks to legendary off-piste opportunities and competitions like the Verbier Ride and O'Neill Xtreme, top skiers and boarders, and plenty of wannabes, come from all over the world to ski Verbier so get ready to fight your way through gaggles of helmeted, shovel-toting freeriders warming up at the top of the main ski lifts each morning.

There’s no question, the standard of skiing in Verbier is high, but there’s no need to feel outclassed, whatever your level. Intermediates might ask themselves why they’re fighting Verbier’s crowds when the Portes du Soleil, might deliver more of their kind of skiing without the hustle, but the answer is simple: Verbier is higher and therefore more snowsure and when you leave the slopes for apres ski and nightlife, there’s no contest.

The choice of accommodation in Verbier includes more than a dozen hotels from 3-star to 5-star, numerous apartments a superb selection of chalet accommodation, to rent or buy, including some of the best luxury chalets in the Alps with services and prices to match. If your budget is more limited, there is cheaper accommodation in the outskirts of Verbier itself (although you will have to catch a bus to get to the main lift) or in Le Chable and the other resorts in the 4 Valleys. Our Verbier accommodation search will automatically expand outwards to include these options.

Located just 167 km from Geneva International Airport, getting to Verbier is easy by road or rail in around 2 hours 30 minutes or less, making it a popular destination also for ski weekends and short breaks.
