Zermatt Ski Resort

Zermatt, the jewel in Switzerland’s crown, is one of the world’s best ski resorts and has a lot going for it besides the Matterhorn, that unique and very prominent iconic asset with which the resort has earned worldwide recognition.

Zermatt is about atmosphere - the old world charm of a farming and mountaineering village long before winter sports were imagined, a charm which seeps out of the ancient clutter of simple alpine timber, stone and slate buildings and which draws you toward the warm glow of its long narrow high street with its lights glistening in the night, enticing you to wander windowshopping or to drop into its many cafes, bars and restaurants. And all this set tightly nestled between the steep mountain ridges at the top of the Matter valley.

Getting there is easy and arriving by train in daylight on the cog railway from Brig builds your expectation. You walk off the platform and straight into old Zermatt. And walking through the hustle and bustle of the electric taxis and horsedrawn carriages and up Bahnhofstrasse to the original Monte Rosa Hotel, you will stop and look up.  As if seamlessly rising from the valley just above the Church, the exquisite Matterhorn dominates your view  but only until you rise higher and see that this is but one remarkbale gem set into a coronet of fabulous high peaks around.

Zermatt is about the wildness, the sense of danger and the exquisite beauty of the high Swiss Alps. It is also very upmarket and stylish, unquestionably unique and cocoons you in its luxury. Though more about scenery than skiing, the Matterhorn remains an inspirational reminder of the 38 other 4000 metre peaks that surround the valley, many of which can be skied, significantly extending the range of the 360km of pistes that make up the Zermatt-Cervinia ski domain.

Zermatt's Matterhorn Ski Paradise certainly justifies the resort's reputation as one of the best winter destinations in the world, but it's the complete package that makes it so good. Best for intermediate and advanced skiers, Zermatt's interconnected ski areas - Rothorn, Gornergrat, Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Schwarzsee - are also connected by lift to the Breuil-Cervinia-Valtournenche ski area and to the Val d'Aosta. The longest ski run extends over a distance of 21 km and 2,279 vertical metres from the Klein Matterhorn down to Zermatt.

Matching the size and diversity of the mountains there's everything at valley level including plenty of accommodation. From top hotels to (relatively) humble stopovers, there are beds galore, and restaurants and nightlife to match, in an old mountain village that has long since grown into a vibrant town.

Zermatt is one of the world's ultimate ski resorts: you have to go.
