Getting to Zermatt

The nearest airports to Zermatt are Sion, Geneva, Zurich and Milan. The final stage of getting to car-free Zermatt is taking the mountain cog railway via Tasch. You can reach Tasch by train from these airports or by car. From Geneva the easiest and quickest way to reach Zermatt is using a ski resort transfer service.

Zermatt-Getting-There

Nearest Airports to Zermatt

Geneva airport 236 km / 2 hours 40 mins drive / 3 hours 50 mins by train
Zurich airport 237 km / 3 hours 50 minutes drive / 3 hours 40 mins by train
Milan Malpensa airport 197 km / 3 hours drive / 3 hours 45 mins by train
Sion airport 82km / 1 hour 30 minutes drive / 2 hours by train

Sion is the closest airport (two hours by train, an hour and a half by car or 20 minutes by helicopter) but has the least flights, so Geneva is the most popular gateway. The rail tunnel which opened in 2008 significantly speeded up train transfers from Zurich and Milan, and they are now slightly quicker than train times from Geneva but driving from Geneva is still the quickest way to get to the resort from any of the  the major international airports, unless you fly in by helicopter. And whilst you can rent a car to get from Geneva to Zermatt, you will have to leave your car at Tasch (see below) for the duration of your stay in Zermatt because Zermatt is car-free so using a private airport transfer service is more convenient.

GVA Transfers: Ski Resort Transfers from Geneva Airport to Zermatt

GVA Transfers' modern fleet of vehicles includes cars, minivans, minibuses and coaches, providing quick and comfortable private transfers for individuals and groups of any size. GVA offer competitive prices, wait if your flight’s delayed, and their 24/7 office is available in case your plans change. At Geneva you’re always met by a GVA representative and taken to your vehicle, which is just a short walk away due to priority parking. Get a transfer quote and book online>>>

Local taxi firms in Zermatt, like Alphubel Taxi + Limousine Services and Taxi Christophe will also quote a price to take you all the way to the resort from any of the airports but from Geneva airport they are usually more expensive than the Ski Resort Transfer service providers. Some firms are allowed to take you to the resort itself rather than drop you off at Tasch for the 12 minute mountain cog railway into Zermatt, but their access into the centre of the resort is restricted so you may have to change to an electric taxi anyway, and the cog railway journey is usually quicker than being driven by car up the twisty mountain road.

Getting from the airport to Zermatt by Rail

The international airports of Sion, Geneva, Zurich and Milan all have good rail connections via Brig or Visp to Tasch where you change onto the cog railway to Zermatt . You can also change trains at Brig or at Visp (from Geneva and Zurich) from the mainline to the mountain cog railway which serves the Zermatt valley.  It's simply a matter of crossing the road from one track to another. The railway journey can be very beautiful.

Driving to Zermatt, Parking at Tasch and Tasch-Zermatt trains

Zermatt is car-free: drivers must park in Täsch, one stop short of Zermatt, where you join the mountain cog railway train for the 12 minute ride into the village. The Tasch-Zermatt trains are frequent (about every 15 minutes during the day) and run both early in the morning and late at night. Car parks (some covered) line the road into Täsch, with a vast open air option on the right, just by the station. The frequent shuttle trains are roll-on/roll-off with a trolley, so you can even wheel your bags straight to your hotel door at the other end, if you're staying close to the station. Alternatively, electric taxis/hotel shuttles and horse drawn carriages ferry visitors to their accommodation. Taxi drivers will be pleased to take your money, but try instead the large hotel listing board at the station, which has phones for ordering free hotel pickups.
