Samoëns

Nestling in the heart of the extensive Grand Massif lift system and its 265km of pistes, Samoëns is the mountain village par excellence. Samoëns has resisted development driven by major tourism projects and makes a point of continuing its traditions. Ideal for skiers and boarders of all levels, Samoëns is a great alternative to better known resorts in the area. Less than an hour away from Geneva airport, this is a very accessible resort.

Being part of the Grand Massif ski area is a major part of the appeal of Samoëns. Boasting 265 kilometres of runs and five interconnected resorts (including Flaine and of course Samoëns), the Grand Massif is now considered one of France’s top three ski areas. Its resorts are diverse and complementary. Located in the département of Haute-Savoie, the Grand Massif has a major asset: its road network. With no twisting, snow-covered minor roads or high, near-impregnable passes Samoëns is easily accessible by road. It is less than 20 minutes from the motorway. Samoëns and the Grand Massif are just 45 minutes from Geneva airport, 15 minutes from Cluses train station, and two hours from Lyon airport.

Samoëns village is famous for the diversity and richness of its cultural and historic heritage. Proud and anxious to preserve its savoir-faire, such as stone cutting, and to conserve the beauty of the landscapes, such as the nature reserve of Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval or the renowned Jaÿsinia Alpine Botanic Garden, Samoëns has managed to safeguard itself from development driven by major tourism projects today and in the past and makes a point of continuing its traditions. This charming village seduces everyone by the variety of activities it has to offer. Though very popular with mountain-lovers who simply prefer to chill, the resort is also seriously sporty.

The Skiing
Criss-crossed with 132 runs adding up to 265 km, and 78 lifts giving seamless links to Flaine, and its other resorts, the Grand Massif is one of the three biggest inter-connected ski areas in France. Its rich variety of terrain – allowing forest treks, great-outdoors skiing at altitude, hair-raising black runs and superb off-piste exploring – is no secret to specialists. Après-ski
There is no shortage of bars, ranging from the traditional French street corner variety where some locals really do drink a “petit blanc” unfeasibly early in the morning, to bars with sunny terraces where you can linger over a morning coffee and croissant, drop in for a pre-dinner apéritif , or a post dinner drink. There’s also an Irish bar where you can find draught Guinness and other Irish beers.

There are plenty of restaurants, most of which offer traditional Savoyard fare, although there are also pizzerias and it is possible to buy a hamburger. Many of the restaurant proprietors have gone to great trouble to ensure that the interiors reflect the Savoyard style, with welcoming chalet décor and often with a roaring log fire. There is usually a choice of at least one fixed-price set menu, and a separate children’s menu for the under 12’s.
