Summer skiing in Europe and North America

Feeling glum that winter's over? It's still possible to ski somewhere in Europe and North America every day from now until the start of the 2007/08 ski season. Here's our guide to the ultimate summer ski spots.
 
NORTH AMERICA
Whistler, BC, Canada
This year the ski pistes on Blackcomb mountain are open until early June as work begins on Whistler mountain for the construction of the record-breaking Peak-to-Peak gondola. Canada's no. 1 ski resort has enjoyed one of its best ever winter season for many years so you are sure to find excellent summer skiing on one of North America's greatest vertical rise mountains.

Mammoth Mountain, CA, USA
Mammoth Mountain in Central California boasts one of the longest ski seasons in North America. Located on the Eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range it counts 300 days of sunshine a year as well as 400 inches of snow.

EUROPE
Zermatt, Switzerland
The Swiss ski resort of Zermatt sits at 1,620 m (5,315 ft) within the Pennine Alps, a mountain chain that stretches from the Grand Combin in the west to the cluster of four thousand metre peaks which form the Monte Rosa massif. Summer skiing takes place on the high altitude pistes of the Klein Matterhorn from mid-July to mid-November.

Tignes, France
With a ski resort altitude of 2,100 meters (6,890 feet) and rising to 3,450 meters (11,319 feet) Tignes’ high location means it always has a good snow covering with skiing all summer on the Grand Motte glacier with 20km of ski pistes and vertical drop of 750m.

Stubai, Austria
Stubai's impressive glacier hangs like a giant meringue at the foot of the long, wide eponymous valley. A snow-sure destination, summer in Stubai appeals to the skier's skier and the boarder's boarder.

The French ski resort of Les Deux Alpes, 1.5 hours drive from Grenoble airport, is home to Europe's largest summer ski glacier and the biggest summer snowpark in Europe.
