Lech-Zurs / Intermediate

The ski areas of Lech and Zürs inter-connect to form a circuit known as ?The White Ring?.
Around 50% of the marked runs are designated intermediate. The ski areas of Lech and Zürs inter-connect to form a circuit known as ?The White Ring?, which also attracts day visitors from nearby St Anton. Recommended is the 5km long ski route (33 and 33a) from the top of Madlochjoch down to Zug. Speed freaks will also find a speed trap skier?s right of the Weibermahd run in Lech; anything above 70 km (43 miles) is an achievement. Keen skiers should also consider a day trip to explore the ski area around St Anton, especially Valluga, the ski routes off Schindler and the long Ulmer Hütte run back to Alpe Rauz.

The White Ring Ski Circuit

1.From the main car park in Zurs ride the Ubungellang chairlift, exit left at top and follow blue run 3 crossiing via bridge over the road to the other side of the valley to Zursersee chairlift.

2. From the top of Zursersee straight ahead and ski a short descent and ride the Madloch chairlift to Madloch-Joch.

3. From the top of Madloch chair (2,450m) heading away from Zurs follow the 5km long red 33 ski route Madloch ? Zug (720m vertical).

4. Two options: ski route 33 left following red 33a to Zug or keep skiers right via ski route red 56 to Lech. We recommend the former.

5. Ride the Zugerberg chair at the base of red 33a to the Palmen Alp restaurant with the option to enjoy quick pit stop.

6. A handy tow rope leads to blue 34 around Kriegerhorn and to the main Lech ski area or blue 43 left to Steinmahder and ride to Zuger Hochlift.

7. Stay high and explore before skiing to Oberlech which is a favourite place for lunch with numerous good restaurants and sun terraces.

8. From Oberlech take blue 34 to Lech and the Rufikopf cable car then back to Zurs via red 38a or blue 38 via Schuttboden and blue 38a via Trittalp then follow runs 3, 5 and 7 back to the car park in Zurs.

9. Time permitting, ride the Trittkopf cable car and ski the full length of red 7 to end a great days skiing.

The White Ring Race

And next time you?re skiing the White Ring imagine what it would be like to race it and how long it might take you to complete the 21.6km long circuit including time taken to ascend the half a dozen or so ski lifts en route?

On Sunday 15 January 2006 350 competitors from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Norway, USA and Chile met at the top of the Rüfikopf above Lech for the Le Mans style start to the first ever "White Ring - The Race".

First to start was Olympic downhill gold medal winner Patrick Ortlieb who although a guest entrant rather than an official competitor still set a fastest time of 44:35:07 some 20 seconds faster than official competitor and race winner Stefan Reichart, a ski instructor from Zürs, closely followed by Daniel Pfeifer of St Anton in second and Zamir Leiva of Chile third place.
