Off-piste
Megève / Off-piste
The top area for off-piste is the “magic garden” at Cote 2000. This is an area found between the women’s downhill run and the Pre Rosset blue run. There are many different routes dropping into a variety of couloirs and valleys and ending on the Pre Rosset. Alternatively, turning left from the top of the Cote 2000 chair, you ski the top part of the Chalet piste and then bear further right dropping into a large off-piste area, choosing routes through wide fields or a narrow stream bed all the way to the bottom of the Cote 2000 area. All over the Rochebrune ridge there are cut-throughs from piste to piste offering great tree skiing. On the Mont d’Arbois side of the mountain, head to the left off the Princess red piste and drop into a wide open field for great powder down to the half way station of the Princesse bubble. From the top of Mont Joux, you can ski off the back of the mountain to Les Communailles. The top part is wide open with multiple opportunities for fresh tracks and the lower part is tree skiing. As you ride the chair lift on the way back up, look to your right and you will see a large field set amongst trees. This short but frequently good powder field is not often skied. From the top of the chair, bear right and ski along the ridge taking the track towards Bettex. After 100m bear right over a field towards some trees. Ski along the top of the ridge to reach the field. At the bottom of the pitch there is a track that leads you back to Les Communailles. Watch out for the stream half way down!
Heading up to Mont Joly on the Épaule chair lift, there are many steep off-piste routes but take care as they are avalanche prone. Head to the left off the chair lift towards St. Nicholas. As you ski along this ridge, look out to your left. There is an area, cleared of scrub, called Le Triangle which is superb in the right conditions. Unless you know where you are, don’t stray off this route as there are cliffs lower down where you will get stuck. The correct route takes you down to La Croix du Christ chair.
From the top of the Mont Joly chair there are many off-piste routes where the bowl opens out to the right. Once again, it is very avalanche prone so care needs to be taken. You can ski from Mont Joly to the neighbouring resort of Les Contamines off-piste but for this you need a mountain guide as there are cliffs to be avoided. Lower down, from the button lift of L'Étudiant, bear right and you can ski through the trees either back down to L'Étudiant – a short run – or keep going further round to ski all the way down to Le Planelet and take the bus back to Mont d’Arbois.
