Tignes

Espace Killy – ‘le plus bel espace de ski du monde’ – claims to be one of the most beautiful ski areas in the world, and we do not disagree. The skiing on offer is massive and, taken together, the ski area of Tignes and Val d’Isere is absolutely world class.

Tignes is anything but beautiful. Situated next door to the more renowned resort of Val d’Isere in the Savoie region of the southern French Alps, Tignes does, at first sight, appear to be a poorer and less attractive neighbour. A mix of long high-rise apartment blocks, some hotels and a few traditional chalets, much of it was purpose built in the 1960/70s and subsequent reinvestment has yet to include refurbishment of many of the hotels and other buildings.

However, look again, appreciate its combination of modern, quick and reliable lifts, its seemingly ceaseless snow, and its impressive array of conventional runs and spine-tingling off-piste, and you will realise that Tignes has far more to offer than the average ski resort.
