Three schools offer group and private tuition in skiing and snowboarding and while good basic skilss tuition is offered to those needing it (children especially) the emphasis is mostly on advanced skills including freestyle, freeride and telemark.Prime Ski School offers fast track private lessons for children (aged 3-5) in groups of 1-4 children at family rates, confidence building lessons for 6-16 year olds(max 8 per group) and for advanced skiers aged 10+ years Prime offer 'New School' instruction in jumps and rails up to advanced spins and jibs, with lessons in the park or big kickers into powderm but with strong emphaisis on safety. In all cases, lessons run for 3 hours per day, so parents will need to consider alternative plans for child supervision outside lesson times.
The numbers and quality of mountain guides in the area reflect this situation and there should be no problem finding a guide with good English. All of the main routes listed above should be done with a guide, for route finding as well as safety reasons. Hidden crevasses are not the only hazard around Engelberg - most of the skiing is on steep north faces, with no easy route back to a pisted area if you need help. Guides can be booked by the day for groups or individuals; one-off descents of the Galtiberg can also be arranged. To hire a mountain guide for one day for groups of 4 or more costs around CHF 125 per person.
