Zermatt / Accommodation

A small proportion of the accommodation on the eastern side of the valley is ski-in, ski-out when the snow is good. When it's not, it's walk-down to the lift in the morning and walk-up again at the end of the day. Also on this side, at 2,000m and reached from an intermediate station of the Gornergrat cog railway, is the five star Riffelalp Resort - the height of luxury - which is truly in the middle of the skiing. A small amount of on-mountain accommodation is also available at Furi, a lift ride from the southern end of town.
For more normal requirements and easy access to town in the evening, a central location is good, though what’s well-placed for Sunnegga will be a long walk in ski boots to the Klein Matterhorn lift station at the other end of town; the bus service is often crowded and certainly not as frequent as it needs to be. Given the Swiss knack for running things like clockwork, this is either the exception that proves the rule or evidence of powerful lobbying by the local taxi union whose members enjoy a humming end of day trade.
