Zermatt / Accommodation

There's no shortage of beds in Zermatt - many of the multi-starred variety - but only a small proportion is ski-in/ski-out, and then only when the snow is good.

There's no shortage of beds in Zermatt - 30 thousand and counting. Many of these are in high quality hotels, including the 5 star Mont Cervin and Zermatterhof; this is certainly one of the best places to visit if you want to spend money with abandon. There’s also the historic Monte Rosa which is modernized but still strong on climbing heritage; also 4 star, sharing an excellent pool, the Ambassador and the Mirabeau. On the edge of town above Sunnegga, the 3 star Bella Vista provides great views, incredible breakfasts and that subtle, non-intrusive yet friendly service that only the best family-run hotels achieve. Catered chalets are hard to find, but there are plenty of self-catering apartments as well as a number of budget places with dormitories including a popular youth hostel.

A small proportion of the accommodation on the eastern side of the valley is ski-in, ski-out when the snow is good. When it's not, it's walk-down to the lift in the morning and walk-up again at the end of the day. Also on this side, at 2,000m and reached from an intermediate station of the Gornergrat cog railway, is the five star Riffelalp Resort - the height of luxury - which is truly in the middle of the skiing. A small amount of on-mountain accommodation is also available at Furi, a lift ride from the southern end of town.

For more normal requirements and easy access to town in the evening, a central location is good, though what’s well-placed for Sunnegga will be a long walk in ski boots to the Klein Matterhorn lift station at the other end of town; the bus service is often crowded and certainly not as frequent as it needs to be. Given the Swiss knack for running things like clockwork, this is either the exception that proves the rule or evidence of powerful lobbying by the local taxi union whose members enjoy a humming end of day trade.
