Zermatt

The jewel in Switzerland’s crown has a lot going for it besides the Matterhorn, that unique and very prominent asset with which the resort has earned worldwide recognition. Though more about scenery than skiing opportunity it remains an inspirational reminder of the 29 other four thousand metre peaks that surround the valley, many of which can be skied, significantly extending the range of the whopping 394 km (244 miles) off-piste that make up the Zermatt-Cervinia ski domain.

Zermatt’s skiing certainly justifies the resort’s reputation as one of the best winter destinations in the world, but it’s the complete package that makes it so good. Matching the size and diversity of the mountains there’s everything at valley level. From top hotels to (relatively) humble stopovers, there are beds galore, and restaurants and nightlife to match, in an old mountain village that has long since grown into a vibrant town. This is one of the world's ultimate ski resorts: you have to go.
