Vail, Colorado, is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, 100 miles (160 km) west of Denver via Interstate 70. Some people are surprised to find that this Interstate, a major highway, runs right through Vail. However, once in the village and on the mountain, skiers do not even realize that it’s there. The nearest international airport is Denver International Airport 120 miles (190 km) east of Vail; that’s a two hours’ drive. Vail/Eagle County Airport is a handy hub roughly 35 miles (56 km) west of Vail on U.S. Highway 6 and Interstate 70. Colorado Mountain Express provides a shuttle service on a frequent schedule to and from both airports— US$67 one-way from Denver—or take a High Mountain Taxi (up to six passengers) for around US$125 one-way.
While parking in the resort is available, it is limited and visitors are encouraged to leave their cars at home and use the town’s convenient public transportation system. The town of Vail offers the country’s largest free intra-city bus service: one service includes Beaver Creek, Keystone, Breckenridge, Silverthorne, Frisco, Dillon, and of course Vail. Vail lies some 39 miles (59 km) west of Keystone and 37 miles (58 km) west of Breckenridge over Vail Pass. There also are numerous outlying routes, so no matter where visitors stay in the Vail Valley, it’s easy and convenient to hop on the bus. The Vail Resorts Express shuttle is the fastest, easiest way to travel between resorts. Winter bus schedules run once in the morning and once in the afternoon between the resorts and the cost is $12. Within Vail another route runs from Lionshead on the west end of Vail to Golden Peak on the eastern edge of town.
