The medieval town of Schladming, parts of which date back to 1322, is the focal point for a series of inner and outer ski areas that comprise the Dachstein Tauern Ski Region in the Austrian province of Styria.

The extensive ski arena is scattered, but its core is based along the southern side of a picturesque valley where mountain after mountain rears up ? altogether there are nine different ski mountains ? each criss-crossed with ski runs.

Planai is linked with the peaks of Hauser Kaibling on one side and Hochwurzen and Reiteralm on the other. In the other direction is the farming village of Haus-im-Ennstal, a ski area in its own right.

Apart from the four lift-connected mountains that form the main 4-Hills Ski Area there are several smaller areas, as well as Dachstein glacier. While the highest elevations are Hoher Dachstein 2996m and Dachstein glacier 2700m, the summits of the four main ski mountains are between 1850m and 2015m with a kilometre or more of ski vertical down to the valley floor.

The entire Dachstein-Tauern ski region is also part of the Ski amadé, Austria?s biggest alliance, which incorporates 25 resorts in five different ski regions, the hub of which is Salzburg, Mozart?s birthplace: the vast ski region takes its amadé branding from Mozart?s middle name, Amadeus.
