You haven’t skied until you’ve skied Canada

From the “youth” of Sun Peaks to the expansion of Fernie, from the wildlife of Jasper to the Olympic fever in Whistler , from the World Heritage site of Banff to the long, long pistes of Panorama, from the wide open skies of Tremblant to the night skiing in Stoneham and almost invariably with an abundance of snow Canada has pretty much got it all.
Awesome scenery and varied resorts from big to small; efficient ski resort infrastructure, great hospitality and international cuisine; orderly lift lines and generally responsible skiers; uncrowded slopes, high-quality tuition, immaculate grooming and, particularly for advanced skiers, an abundance of “off-piste” that in Europe would be classified and require a guide to experience. There may not be enough superlatives to describe skiing in Canada.

With nearly as many daily flights across the Atlantic as buses across Clapham Common, it’s never been easier to get to Canada. If travelling from the UK you only need your passport as there are no visa requirements (please check if you are travelling from other countries), your driving licence is good for car rental and your shopping will be duty free. Be sure you have travel insurance and don’t forget your toothbrush. It’s that simple.

Investment in technology and infrastructure, which is ongoing in many resorts, is providing ever more high-speed lifts and improved mountain bases. And although some smaller resorts have further improvements to make, ski area management in Canada continues to be driven by strong competitive instincts, with a focus on service and efficiency leading to improvements for skiers and snowboarders year on year.

The United Nations has ranked Canada as the best place in the world to live. It’s also a great place to visit: affordable, diverse, naturally beautiful and a great place for families. But Canadian resorts have no intention to kill the goose that laid the golden egg by driving skiers away through overcrowding. They have an admirable regard for sustainable tourism.

On February 12th 2010 the 21st Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will open in Canada. Although centred in Whistler and Vancouver, the Canadians see the games as belonging to everyone. You can expect the warmest of welcomes, unrivalled hospitality and, of course, world class entertainment from eighty six winter sports.
