Courchevel Ski Schools, Instructors and Guides

There are lots of different options here; the ESF can be prone to the usual charges of complacency but thanks to the average clientele in resort they are one of the more attentive schools in the French Alps. For those who are not convinced by the ESF there is also the well-regarded Magic In Motion, the innovative British ski school New Generation, the Supreme Ski School who also specialise in English-speaking lessons, and Oxygene, who perfected their art in La Plagne. Off-piste guiding is available from the Bureau Des Guides.

ESF Courchevel

Based in the La Croisette, at the heart of 1850, the ESF (Ecole du Ski Francais) is very convenient and the daddy of Courchevel’s ski schools having been established in 1947. The ESF in Courchevel caters for all needs at all levels and offers private, small group and large group tuition for all skiing and snowboarding. The ESF employs over 500 instructors, which is not that surprising given the importance of private tuition for wealthy guests, and there are as many as 800 ski instructors throughout the resort as a whole. The ESF also offers the Children’s Village creche, with qualified nannies and ski tuition for children from 18 months. Children are offered a structured programme from first time beginner to “chamois”, which requires then to negotiate 30-40 gates in a vertical drop of 200m in a certain time. The ESF also offers a guiding service.

Childcare in ski resorts is not always well orchestrated, but Courchevel has several public creches to supplement the numerous private facilities offered by chalet companies and hotels. One creche can take up to 54 children and is open all year around, while another accepts up to 80 children, but is only open for the winter.
