Accommodation

Wildschonau

The Wildschonau offers a choice of three villages – Niederau, Oberau and Auffach – each having a reasonable selection of family-run hotels and bed & breakfast guesthouses.

Ski Accommodation in Niederau

Niederau, the first and largest of the Wildschonau’s three villages, offers a wide slection of accommodation including some relatively large 4-star (at a pinch!) hotels favoured by tour operators and enjoyable skiing on Markbachjoch (21km); best suited for novices and improving beginners.

With fewer apres ski attractions or distractions, the smaller villages of Oberau and Auffach are relatively unknown to skiers outside Austria and Germany and too small for package tour operators, but a good bet for independent travellers searching for ski accommodation conveniently close to Wildschonau’s biggest and best ski area and in a more peaceful setting

Ski Accommodation in Oberau

In the heart of the Wildschonau, approximately 5km from Niederau, Oberau is a charming and peaceful village with its own tiny ski area (6km) for beginners, and a few good hotels including the charming Gasthof Kellerwirt, an historic Tirolean Inn which is well worth visiting for dinner no matter where in the Wildschonau you are staying.

Ski Accommodation in Auffach

However, the new gondola connecting Auffach’s Schatzberg ski area (41km) with the Wiedersberger Horn ski area (61km) at Alpbach, tips the balance firmly in favour of Auffach at the far end of the Wildschonau. Like Oberau, Auffach is prettier and quieter than Niederau, and hotel accommodation in both of these villages generally is of a higher standard than in Niederau.
