Accommodation options in upscale Telluride range from The Peaks Resort, with its own health spa, outdoor pool and indoor climbing wall, to off the beaten path rustic lodges.
Telluride Ski Resort is quite upscale, with the emphasis on luxurious lodgings, but there are also basic hotels for the budget-conscious traveler and a wide variety of condos and bed & breakfasts. Between the town of Telluride and the Mountain Village there are approximately 16 hotels and a bed base of 5,200 pillows, so plenty to choose from. But one primary question you must ask before coming here is whether you prefer being in the middle of all the action or whether you crave solitude, because the houses, rustic lodges, and guest ranches are more off the beaten path (one is reachable only by snowmobile), forcing you to travel some distance.
Accommodation in the town of Telluride
If you’re looking for a more authentic Colorado experience, choose one of the many lodging options in the town of Telluride. Here, narrow streets and smaller boutique hotels are the norm. We highly recommend the River Club (http://www.theriverclub.com). Rarely have we come across a property we liked more. Located on the banks of the San Miguel River only two blocks from the gondola, the River Club is civilized elegance with a laid back atmosphere. The Club’s emphasis on hands off, “if there if you need anything, just ask” customer service is refreshing, particularly nowadays, where many resorts equate “good service” with a maddeningly frenetic buzz of activity that really inhibits relaxation. And speaking of relaxation, the River Club’s all stone slab hot tub (replete with waterfall and views of the San Miguel and the slopes) get our nod as the “top tub” in ski country. Throw in a reliable all night shuttle to whisk you to and from your posh and spacious unit and you have one of the all around best properties in the Rockies – truly a hidden gem.
Accommodation in Telluride Mountain Village
The Mountain Village’s newest hotel, Cappella Telluride, offers five-star service and amenities in a slope-side setting. Staying at Capella includes a Personal Assistant who will prepare a customized itinerary and arrange for your every need, including your favorite beverages in your refrigerator on arrival. Capella also offers a cozy and relaxing private living room, with a fireplace, freshly baked afternoon cookies, and refreshments. Its rooms are well-equipped, and the hot tub and pool provide views of the mountain through large sliding windows. Capella also boasts sophisticated-dining at The Onyx, but plan ahead, because the Onyx is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Also in Mountain Village, The Peaks Resort and Golden Door Spa at Mountain Villagehas become a favorite among visitors. This elegant hotel features an extensive health spa, outdoor pool, waterslide, and an indoor climbing wall. The expansive ski shop and rental store doubles in the summertime for a golf pro shop. The rooms are completely renovated for the 2010-11 season, and outfitted with the newest furnishings and amenities. The Peaks also has Palmyra Restaurant, a newly re-designed rustic-feeling restaurant and bar.
Also new to the Mountain Village is Lumiere, a boutique ski-in/ski-out hotel with a cozy chic-ish modern atmosphere, amazing views, and an apres-ski sushi bar. Lumiere boasts roomy studio suites and penthouses to accommodate a couples retreat to a family reunion. Every unit contains flat panel televisions with surround sound (the hotel has its own DVD library), fireplaces, and first-class service. Lumiere provides pantry stocking and ski valet as well as overnight ski tuning.
