Val d’Isere Ski Schools

Known primarily as a ski resort for experienced skiers the boundaries between ski schools and guiding are less clear cut in Val d’Isere than in most other resorts. Many of Val d’Isere’s ski schools also offering guiding off-piste while guiding organisations also offering instruction from innovative and forward thinking instructors.

Val d’Isere has a rich history of pioneering ski schools and guides. The resort was an early battleground for the Ecole du Ski Français when it attempted to stop rival independent ski schools opening up, but nowadays skiers and boarders in Val d’Isere have many options.

The ESF, in the ski resort centre and in La Daille, covers adults and children’s group lessons, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. ESF also offers day outings in the ski area, inter-resort tours, powder skiing and off-piste itineraries with the possibility of a return by helicopter, along with snowshoe and telemark skiing.

There are a number of British ski schools, including ICE, a BASI Partner training centre which runs Gap-year courses, instructor training and performance courses for all levels of skier, and TDC Ski. The Snow Fun ski school also offers group and private ski lessons, off-piste, and children’s courses. Oxygene is another very good ski school and among usual offerings provides ladies-only ski lessons, for those who want to avoid the macho approach.

For snowboarders Misty Fly Snowboard School offers a full range of snowboard tuition.

Val d’Isere Mountain Guides

Numerous ski instructors, mountain guides and private ski schools offer a wide choice of possibilities alongside the traditional ESF: freestyle, off-piste, telemarking and ski touring (there’s excellent ski touring terrain between Champagny, La PlagneLes Arcs and the Aiguille Rouge).  Powder hounds can also slake their thirst by heli-skiing across the border in Italy, as the practice remains banned in France. If venturing off-piste the following specialist guiding companies are recommended:

Top Ski

Off-piste specialist ski school founded by Patrick Zimmer, celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2016. TopSki was one of the first in France – possibly the first – to defy the ESF, and set the pattern for proliferating ski schools in almost every major French resort.
